Choral Kinship One of the biggest challenges for Woom is maintaining the difference between friend life and band life. But the confluence of those things is also exactly why the choral trio functions so well. “The reason the band exists and continues is because of the friendship, which also came together from the music,” says Lara Laeverenz. “They flow together.” This year, Woom started releasing original material for the first time: the calm, beautiful To Slow You EP, bolstered by instrumentation from other musical friends. It wasn’t so much a leap in ambition as a natural shift, says Laeverence. “When you’re arranging songs, you’re creating new harmonies. So we were building these tools, learning about each other and how we create, and a lot of that came from improvisation.” Woom will be performing live at A TOAST Festive Market on 6 December. A TOAST Festive Gathering Last week, we gathered for a festive event with members of the TOAST community and TOAST CEO, Suzie de Rohan Willner. Together, we participated in a workshop with Lola Lely, co-founder of Wax Atelier. Lola guided us through repurposing remnant TOAST textiles, coated with a blend of natural waxes, into decorative botanical designs. In the evening, we enjoyed a meal at modern European restaurant, Perilla. Located in Newington Green, north London, the eatery is renowned for its inventive use of seasonal British ingredients. The menu featured parsley and lovage soup with horseradish crème fraiche, beef short rib bourguignon with wild mushroom, and cauliflower ‘carbonara’ tart with truffle sauce. Vernacular Furniture Chris Williams has always had a passion for chairs. Based on the rural west coast of Wales, he has spent more than 30 years making Welsh stick chairs, which he crafts using timber foraged directly from the hedgerows. “When I harvest the wood, I do it in such a way that you’d never know I’d been there,” Chris says. “And I like to document exactly where the materials come from, so I can pass that information on to whoever buys the chair.” Growing up in a small community, Chris’s life was already interwoven with craft and the countryside, but it was an apprenticeship with a local authority that set him on the path he still follows. “I was taught how to make box sash windows, and I also got to work on old farms, making gates, repairing barn doors, that kind of thing,” he reflects. “So very early on I fell in love with carpentry, but there was also a real connection to the countryside.” Read more about Chris's process on the #TOASTmagazine via the link in bio.
